Together in Christ: Lutherans and Catholics Commemorating the Reformation
2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. After centuries of division, Lutherans and Catholics have for the past 50 years been meeting and discussing what we share in common as disciples of Jesus Christ.
This led to the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification in 1999. Subsequent to that The Lutheran World Federation and The Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity published “From Conflict to Communion: Lutheran – Catholic Common Commemoration of the Reformation in 2017.”
Based on this document, The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) appointed a joint committee to prepare a parish study guide to help Lutherans and Catholics come together to facilitate discussions touching on some of the questions and issues surrounding the Reformation and the advancements in reconciliation which have occurred.
To that end, St Jerome Catholic Church and Zion Lutheran Church will jointly host the five-week study program designed by CCCB and ELCIC beginning on Wednesday January 25, during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and for the next four Wednesday evenings.
We will alternate locations between Zion Lutheran and St Jerome's. Each session will be two hours long and will consist of prayer, a video presentation, discussion time, brief Scripture study and, of course, time for fellowship.
While we think you would benefit most by attending all sessions, you may come to only those sessions which your time and other commitments allow.
All are welcome - looking forward to seeing you there!
