Fr. Jim was born in Sudbury in 1940 and raised in Creighton Mines, Ontario. After high school (St. Charles College, Sudbury), he went to St. Peter's Seminary where he completed degree courses in Philosophy and Theology. He was ordained to the Order of Presbyters (priest) in St. Michael's Church, Creighton Mines on May 12, 1966.

1967 - 1971 - Assistant Priest at Precious Blood Cathedral, Sault Ste. Marie
1971 - 1974 - Founder and first Executive Director of Telecare, Sault Ste. Marie
1974 - 1983 - Pastor, Holy Name of Jesus Parish, North Bay
1983 - 2000 - Pastor, St. Jerome's Parish, Sault Ste. Marie
2000 - - Pastor, St. Patrick's Parish, Sudbury
In his years of ministry, after completion of an M.A. in Theology in 1972, with emphasis on Liturgical Studies (University of Notre Dame, Indiana), Fr. Hutton served as Diocesan Co-ordinator of Liturgy (English Sector) for 21 years. Over the years he has also been involved in ecumenical and interfaith ministries. He is currently a Diocesan representative to the Ontario Catholic Conference for Ecumenism.
