"Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?'” John 20.15a
Mary Magdalene was one of the few followers of Jesus who had the courage to stay with Jesus until the end of his passion and death. She goes back to the tomb searching for Jesus only to find the tomb empty. She sees Jesus but does not recognize him. She is looking for the Jesus of the past.
The image of the Jesus she knew prevents her from recognizing the risen Jesus. Jesus calls her by name and she recognizes Him. “Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father’!" (John 20.17a) Mary Magdalene must leave Jesus of the past and take on her mission with the Jesus of the present.
Our journey is much like Mary Magdalene’s. We move through a painstaking search to find a new encounter at Easter. It is important for us to live in and through the circumstances of life that we may discover Christ of our present and live the Gospel message. May your encounter with the risen Lord this Easter refresh and revitalize your heart and soul that you may take on your mission to evangelize your world.
On behalf of our parish staff, Fr. Daniele, Deacon Marcel, Kerry and Wayne, I wish you and your families a Blessed and Holy Easter.
